How welcome bonus wagering actually works

The four numbers that determine whether a welcome bonus is worth claiming, walked through with the math.

9 min read · last updated 2026-05-11

Most welcome bonuses look generous on the landing page and turn out to be modest in expected value once the wagering math runs through. This guide walks the four parameters that determine the actual cleared-out value of any welcome offer — wagering multiplier, max bet during wagering, validity window, max cashout cap — and shows how to back-of-the-envelope the realistic upside before depositing.

IN THIS GUIDE

SECTION 01

The wagering multiplier

Wagering — also called rollover or playthrough — is the multiplier the operator applies to your bonus amount to set a turnover target. A bonus of $1,000 with 40x wagering means you must wager $40,000 of qualifying slot turnover before any winnings derived from the bonus can be withdrawn. The clock on this target is the validity window; the bet ceiling is the max-bet rule; and the maximum you can ever withdraw is the max cashout cap.

The wagering multiplier alone tells you roughly how much turnover you need to generate to clear the bonus. A $1,000 bonus at 40x is $40,000 of slot bets in total. At a $5 max bet and an average of 7,200 spins per hour of continuous play (the upper bound for continuous slot play), that's 8,000 spins or about 1.1 hours of continuous play at $5 each. In practice, no one plays at the maximum bet for the entire wagering — variance forces session sizing down — so realistic clearing takes 6-15 hours of slot play spread across the validity window.

Industry standard wagering across crypto-friendly casinos sits at 35-45x. 30x or below is unusually generous; 50x or above is unusually punishing. A small number of operators offer wager-free welcome bonuses where the multiplier is 0x — those are the highest-value bonuses by structural design, because every dollar of bonus credit becomes immediately withdrawable real cash.

Rule of thumb

At 40x slots-only wagering with a $5 max bet, expect the cleared-out value of a welcome offer to land at 20-30% of the headline number. At 0x (wager-free), expected value approaches 100% of headline. At 45-50x with a max cashout cap, expected value drops below 15%.

SECTION 02

Bonus contribution by game category

Wagering doesn't apply equally across all games. The operator's T&Cs typically specify contribution rates per game category: slots usually contribute 100% to clearing the wagering, table games 5-20%, live dealer 0-10%, and specific titles can be excluded entirely. A welcome bonus you intend to clear on blackjack at 10% contribution rate requires 10x as much turnover as the same wagering on slots — that is, a $40,000 slot target becomes a $400,000 blackjack target.

Some operators publish a precise contribution table; others bundle non-slot games into a vague "may not contribute" line. The safest assumption: clear the wagering on standard slot titles from major providers (NetEnt, Pragmatic Play, Play'n GO, Yggdrasil), and avoid live dealer, table games, and jackpot slots during bonus play. Read the eligible/excluded games list before depositing — some operators void the bonus outright if you play certain titles while bonus is active, not merely reduce contribution.

SECTION 03

The max bet rule

$5 is the industry-standard max bet during wagering. Any single spin or hand above the cap during the wagering period typically voids the bonus and any winnings derived from it. The cap doesn't change based on how much you've deposited — it's tied to the bonus, and it applies on every bet until the bonus is either cleared or expired.

The most common way players accidentally violate the max-bet rule is bonus-buy slot features. Buying a bonus round on Nolimit City's Tombstone or Pragmatic Play's Gates of Olympus typically costs 50-100x the base bet, which means even at a $0.20 base bet the bonus buy costs $20 — four times the max bet. Most operators consider the bonus-buy purchase as a single bet for max-bet rule purposes, which means it triggers voidance. Some operators explicitly prohibit bonus-buy purchases during welcome bonus wagering as a standalone clause; others let the max-bet rule do the work. Either way, avoid bonus buys until the wagering is fully cleared.

SECTION 04

Validity window — the time clock

The validity window is how long after claiming the bonus you have to complete the wagering. 7 days is segment-standard; 14 days is generous; 21+ days is rare. After the window closes, any unwagered bonus and any unwithdrawn winnings derived from the bonus are forfeited automatically.

Validity matters because it determines how compressed your play has to be. A 7-day window at $40,000 target turnover requires roughly $5,700 of daily slot turnover average — achievable for a serious player but not for a casual one. A 14-day window at the same target halves the daily requirement to $2,850, which is materially more clearable at a sustainable bankroll. The bureau's analysis treats validity as the second-most important structural parameter after wagering itself.

SECTION 05

Max cashout cap — the hidden ceiling

The max cashout cap is the single largest hidden constraint in welcome offers. It sets a ceiling on what a player can withdraw from bonus-derived winnings, irrespective of how much was won during the wagering clearance. A $10,000 headline bonus with a $5,000 max cashout cap pays out at most $5,000 — even if your bonus-funded play generated $30,000 in winnings, the operator reclaims the excess at the cap.

Cashout caps in the bureau's monitored set range from no cap at all (Oshi's welcome on the standard offer) to 50% of headline (Lucky Dreams at $5,000 cap on $10,000 headline) to as low as 5-10x bonus value at some operators outside the bureau set. The lower the cap relative to headline, the more aggressively the operator is structurally limiting upside while marketing the higher number.

When comparing welcome bonuses, multiply headline by (max cashout / max possible bonus) to get the realistic ceiling. For example, Lucky Dreams' $10,000 headline with $5,000 max cashout means the realistic ceiling is $5,000. mBit's $10,000 (approximately 4 BTC) with no cap means the realistic ceiling is uncapped, limited only by how much you actually win during the wagering. Two headlines that look identical can have wildly different realistic ceilings.

SECTION 06

Putting the four numbers together

Take any welcome bonus and run through the four parameters: wagering multiplier, max bet, validity, max cashout. From there, a rough expected-value estimate is achievable without specialized math:

Step one: estimate how much of the bonus you'd realistically clear within the validity window. At 7 days and 40x wagering on a $1,000 bonus, a player who can commit roughly 4-6 hours of play per day clears the wagering; a player who can commit 1-2 hours per day clears half of it and forfeits the rest.

Step two: estimate the variance of clearing. At a 96% RTP slot library and a $5 max bet, the standard deviation of $40,000 of turnover is roughly $1,200 in either direction. Half of clearing sessions end up positive, half negative; the bonus's actual contribution to your bankroll after fully clearing is roughly $200-$500 on average for a $1,000 bonus, with substantial variance.

Step three: apply the cashout cap. If the cap is below the realistic upper tail of your cleared-out winnings, the cap binds and your maximum take-home is the cap. If the cap is above that range or absent, the cleared-out value applies directly.

The bureau publishes the four parameters in plain numbers for every welcome bonus on the /casinos page comparison table, so this math doesn't require digging through five pages of T&Cs.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Should I always claim the welcome bonus?+
No. For casual players who deposit small amounts and play sporadically, claiming an aggressive welcome bonus locks up bankroll behind wagering you may not clear in the validity window, and any unwagered winnings forfeit. Casual players are often better off depositing cash-only and skipping the bonus.
What's the highest-EV welcome bonus structure?+
Wager-free welcome bonuses with no max cashout cap, paid as real cash credit, on a 7+ day validity window. Winz.io's Wheel of Winz is the bureau's only fully wager-free welcome operator. Expected value approaches 100% of headline.
Why is wagering on slots only?+
Slot games have a built-in house edge that runs reliably for the operator across millions of spins. Live dealer and table games have either lower house edges or more variance per hand, which makes the operator's wagering math riskier. Slots-only contribution lets the operator predictably extract turnover during the wagering window.
Can I cash out partway through wagering?+
Not without forfeiting the bonus and any bonus-derived winnings. Withdrawing before wagering is complete typically voids the active bonus and any winnings from it. Some operators let you cancel the bonus and withdraw your original deposit, but anything derived from bonus play is gone.
What happens if I bet over $5 during wagering?+
Most operators void the bonus and any winnings from it. Some operators only void the specific spin, not the entire bonus, but that's the minority structure. Stay strictly below the max-bet line until wagering is fully cleared.
